چکیده

Aims Micro-CT scanning technology has been increasingly used in various fields of forensic science, however rarely in forensic dentistry. Forensic dentists are regularly confronted with incidents involving high temperatures (e.g. airplane crashes, natural disasters, house fires) and therefore information gained from experimental research can provide useful information for estimating temperature based on tissue changes to then facilitate victim identification.

Teeth in Fire - Morphologic and Radiographic Alterations: An In Vitro Study

Teeth are the components of the body that often survive severe fires because of their high resistant composition and also because they are protected by the soft and hard tissues of the face. The damage caused by heat can make medico legal identification of human remains difficult in mass disasters associated with fire. The morphologic and radiographic evaluation of dental remains represents a s...

Dental forensic identification in the 2003 Cedar Fire.

The Cedar Fire burned a large area of San Diego County in October 2003. By the time it was extinguished in mid-November, it had consumed more acres than any fire in California's history. Fifteen people lost their lives because of the fire. Forensic dentistry played a prominent role in the identification of the victims.

In situ X-ray scattering evaluation of heat-induced ultrastructural changes in dental tissues and synthetic hydroxyapatite.

Human dental tissues consist of inorganic constituents (mainly crystallites of hydroxyapatite, HAp) and organic matrix. In addition, synthetic HAp powders are frequently used in medical and chemical applications. Insights into the ultrastructural alterations of skeletal hard tissues exposed to thermal treatment are crucial for the estimation of temperature of exposure in forensic and archaeolog...

Identification of two fire victims by comparative nuclear DNA typing of skeletal remains and stored umbilical tissues.

We describe here our collaborative efforts in identifying 2 fatalities of a fire disaster by using a variety of identification techniques. Postmortem findings in both cases were reinforced using Short Tandem Repeat (STR) DNA technology to establish with a high degree of certainty the identities of 2 child victims. STR markers used in the present study include HUMAMEL, HUMCSFIPO, HUMTHO1, HUMvWA...

Induced tissue cell death by magnetic nanoparticle hyperthermia for cancer treatment: an in silico study

In this paper, we simulate magnetic hyperthermia process on a mathematical phantom model representing cancer tumor and its surrounding healthy tissues. The temperature distribution throughout the phantom model is obtained by solving the bio-heat equations and the consequent cell death amount is calculated using correlations between the tissue local temperature and the cell death rate. To have a...
